A recap on the Beetlejuice story

The plot tells the story of a strange and unusual teenager, Lydia Deetz, who is obsessed with dying and being dead. This teenage girl’s wishes come true when she moves into a new house where the former residents, who were recently killed in a car crash, haunt their home. However, they’re not the only supernatural creatures at play here, as this is where the devious poltergeist Beetlejuice also resides.

The Maitlands (the ghost couple) want their home back but the only way to do that is to scare the new family away. They don’t prove to have any luck and have to enlist the help of the pesky demon Beetlejuice who causes nothing but hellish havoc.

Tim Burton’s cult movie vs Beetlejuice The Musical on Broadway

Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1988) — the cult fantasy-horror-comedy — became an instant classic, earning over $58 million at the box office and winning an Academy Award for Best Makeup. Written by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson, and brought to life by Burton’s distinctive vision, the film remains one of his most iconic creations.

Beetlejuice The Musical builds on the film’s legacy with more of what fans love — more Beetlejuice! The stage adaptation features a Tony Award-nominated book and score, and transforms the original story into a full-blown Broadway spectacle. With eight Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score, Beetlejuice The Musical has become a fan-favourite in its own right.

Beetlejuice The Musical Cast

The cast for the West End production of Beetlejuice The Musical has yet to be announced.

Star Alex Brightman earned a Tony nomination for his performance as Beetlejuice on Broadway, but casting for the London production has not yet been confirmed. One thing’s certain — Beetlejuice tickets in London will be in high demand.

Beetlejuice The Musical Creatives

Beetlejuice The Musical features a Tony Award-nominated book by Scott Brown and Anthony King, and a score by Eddie Perfect. Brown and King previously collaborated on Gutenberg! The Musical and bring experience from hit TV shows like Castle Rock (Hulu), Silicon Valley, and Broad City.

Eddie Perfect, best known in Australia for Shane Warne: The Musical, made his Broadway debut with Beetlejuice, earning praise for his bold, original score. Together, this creative team helped turn Beetlejuice The Musical into a Broadway cult hit — and now it’s heading for the West End.

Our Dream Cast for Beetlejuice The Musical

Our Dream Cast for Beetlejuice The Musical

It’s showtime, London. After haunting Broadway and touring across the US, Beetlejuice The Musical is finally heading to the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre next year — and tickets go on sale this Halloween. Naturally, we couldn’t resist a little dreamcasting.

This is West End fantasy casting at its finest, so let’s fill the Netherworld with theatre greats who can sing the roof off and throw themselves into the chaos with full-throttle commitment.

Beetlejuice
Our ghost-with-the-most needs a comic genius with unrelenting stamina and full gremlin energy. Alex Brightman is the obvious choice, he originated the role of Beetlejuice on Broadway, performing throughout the show’s initial run from April 2019 to March 2020, and later returned to reprise the part for its revival from April 2022 to January 2023. West End audiences would lose it; he’s got the growl, the wit, and the manic magnetism of a caffeinated demon.

But if we’re keeping it homegrown, Simon Lipkin could absolutely carry the show on his back. He was born for chaos, flipping from cheeky chappie to possessed ghoul in half a beat. Joel Montague (one of our favourite flamboyant King George III in Hamilton) would also bring powerhouse vocals and beautifully unhinged energy

Beetlejuice The Musical: Meet the Characters

Beetlejuice The Musical: Meet the Characters

We recently announced that Beetlejuice The Musical is heading to London’s West End following its success on Broadway and US tours. Based on Tim Burton’s much-loved 1988 film, the musical brings back a cast of unforgettable characters—some living, some dead, and some in between. Their eccentric personalities and unexpected connections create a world where the living and the dead collide in the most unexpected ways.

Beetlejuice

At the centre of it all is Beetlejuice, the wild and unpredictable spirit whose name has become synonymous with mischief. He’s larger than life, impossible to ignore, and always ready to cause mayhem. Whether you love him or fear him, Beetlejuice is the driving force of the story. Behind the jokes and theatrics, though, he’s entirely out for himself—constantly scheming, twisting every situation to his own advantage, and thriving on the chaos he leaves in his wake.

What Is Beetlejuice The Musical About?

Beetlejuice The Musical is a stage adaptation of Tim Burton’s cult-classic 1988 film Beetlejuice, which starred Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Geena Davis, and Alec Baldwin. The movie became a gothic comedy favourite, known for its surreal visuals and quotable lines like “It’s showtime!” and “Never trust the living.”

The musical takes the offbeat humour and supernatural chaos of the film and transforms it into a Broadway spectacle. It follows Lydia Deetz, a teenager obsessed with the afterlife, who encounters a mischievous bio-exorcist named Beetlejuice after her family moves into a haunted house. Expect outrageous comedy, dazzling design, and a surprisingly heartfelt story about grief, family, and acceptance.

If I say Beetlejuice 3 times will the Broadway musical transfer to the West End? #WestEndWishlist

On a recent trip to New York, I saw Beetlejuice The Musical on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre and it beyond lived up to the hype I’d been hearing from this side of the pond. The critics and public alike have been raving and it fast became a bucket list must-see for me. This isn’t just a musical but a completely electric experience and it’s one that West End theatre fans desperately need!

During the month of October 2019, Beetlejuice The Musical celebratied Halloween every day by giving out limited edition Playbills*, hosting costume contests and offering exclusive swag and Halloween cocktails.

*Playbills are the US’ version of programmes and they’re completely free to every ticket holder. Basically, the West End needs playbills.
